TALLAHASSEE — When Gov. Ron DeSantis speaks to supporters, he draws some of the loudest cheers when he talks about taking on Walt Disney Co.
And during the coming week, you can expect DeSantis and Republican lawmakers to talk a lot about taking on the big, bad mouse.
Lawmakers will start a special legislative session Monday that is expected to include the state taking control of the Reedy Creek Improvement District, a special taxing district that was created for Disney in 1967 and essentially gave the entertainment giant control over issues such as land use, fire protection and wastewater services.
DeSantis and his Republican legislative allies targeted Reedy Creek last year after Disney publicly opposed a law that restricts instruction about gender identity and sexual orientation in schools. The Legislature passed a measure to dissolve Reedy Creek, but the dissolution did not take effect until June 1, 2023 — effectively giving lawmakers time to re-establish the district and make changes.
That is what is expected to happen during the special session.
“We are not going to have a corporation controlling its own government. That’s going to revert to the state,” DeSantis said. “The state is going to have a board to run it, so Disney will not have self-governing status anymore. We are going to make sure that there are no special legal privileges and that they are abiding by the same laws. That’ll be in the bill, and we’re making sure they are paying their fair share of taxes and paying the debt.”
