Stephen Grimes, who served on the Florida Supreme Court from 1987 to 1997, died Friday at age 93, the court announced. Grimes, who was chief justice from 1994 to 1996, received his law degree from the University of Florida in 1954. He worked for the Holland & Knight law firm in Bartow before being appointed in 1973 to the 2nd District Court of Appeal. Then-Gov. Bob Martinez appointed him to the Supreme Court in 1987. After leaving the court in 1997, Grimes returned to practicing law at Holland & Knight. Services were pending Friday for Grimes, who died in Tallahassee.
