A primary-election fight between Senate Minority Leader Lauren Book, D-Plantation, and former Broward County Mayor Barbara Sharief could turn into one of the most-expensive legislative races of the year. Book in April raised $77,240 for her campaign account and $494,500 for her Leadership for Broward political committee, according to newly filed finance reports. The Leadership for Broward contributions included $100,000 from the Miami Dolphins and $100,000 from another Book-affiliated committee. Meanwhile, Sharief loaned $500,000 to her campaign, while raising $8,385, the reports show. Book and Sharief are running in the Aug. 23 Democratic primary in the redrawn Senate District 35.
